Ingersoll Cutting Tool Company (ICTC), located in Rockford, Illinois, is a manufacturer of indexable metal cutting tools. Approximately 60% of orders for these tools are non-stock specials requiring design, NC programming, and routing/process planning. Recognizing a need to reduce the delivery times for this segment of the business, ICTC began a series of lead-time reduction efforts in 1992 to shorten the order processing and request-for-quotation (RFQ) times. Many lessons have been learned from these efforts. Complex organizational issues such as reporting structure, job titles, compensation, responsibility/authority levels were addressed as the projects progressed. Knowledge and experience gained from each has benefited ICTC in subsequent lead-time reduction efforts.
