This paper aims at giving an overview about the use of simulation studies for analyzing and designing logistic systems from a practical point of view. It explains simulation in general and presents reasons and guidelines for applying simulation. Two types of simulation tools are characterized with their typical area of usage. Along with a description of advantages, disadvantages and typical pitfalls for the application in practice, a guidelines is given for selecting the right type of simulation tool. Additionally, basic design rules for simulation models are stated. Finally, four simulation studies, representing the use of different tools for solving various problems in diverse industries are presented.
