A method for enhancing an existing mechanistic model for the prediction of the cutting force system in drilling with cutting edges of arbitrary shape is presented. The model is enhanced using a minimum cutting energy criterion to determine the chip flow angle. With the use of the minimum energy method, predictions of the generated torque and thrust are improved in comparison to predictions made without the minimum energy method. Predictions made by the improved model are also seen to compare favorably with drilling experiment results.
