Using simulations and experiments, a systematic qualitative and quantitative analysis of the frequency content of turned surface profiles is presented. The foundation is a model of the surface generation process based on process geometry and kinematics. The principal goal is to create a methodology that establishes a correlation between the machined surface topography and of the factors that affect it, and that allows the prediction of the profile's frequency domain characteristics. The essential variables considered are the relative motion between the tool and the workpiece, defined by vibrations and error motions, and tool geometry.
