A new analytical model for the prediction of chatter stability for boring using non-rotating boring bars is presented. The dynamics of the boring process is obtained by combining a mechanistic cutting force model of the boring process with the structural dynamics of the boring bar. The chatter stability limits are obtained by solving the first order characteristic equation of the system dynamic equations. This analytical model can be used to quickly compute the chatter stability for a multi-insert boring operation. The results from the analytical model are validated using traditional time domain simulations and experimental results from literature.
