A NEW METHOD HAS BEEN EXAMINED FOR THE RELIABLE BREAKING OF CONTINUOUS CHIPS DURING HOLE BORING, INDEPENDENT OF CUTTING CONDITIONS AND THE MATERIAL BEING MACHINED. THE METHOD IS BASED ON SETTING THE BORING BAR IN CONTROLLED OSCILLATION ALONG ITS LONGITUDINAL AXIS BY MEANS OF A SPECIAL OSCILLATOR. THE KINEMATIC CONDITION FOR CHIP BREAKING, AS WELL AS THE EFFECT OF CONTROLLED TOOL OSCILLATION ON THE ROUGHNESS OF THE MACHINED SURFACE AND THE PROGRESS OF WEAR OF THE CUTTING TOOL, HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. BASED ON THE ROUGHNESS OF THE MACHINED SURFACE, THE OPTIMAL TOOL OSCILLATION AMPLITUDE HAS BEEN FOUND.
