A STUDY WAS MADE OF THREE APPROACHES FOR DEVELOPING VARIABLE WORK SPEEDS FOR CAM GRINDING. THE FIRST USED ONLY THE PREDETERMINED DYNAMIC CONSTRAINTS OF THE HEADSTOCK AND WHEELFEED FOR VELOCITY, ACCELERATION, AND JERK. THE SECOND USED THESE SAME DYNAMIC CONSTRAINTS, BUT WITH THE ADDITIONAL CONSTRAINT OF CONSTANT SURFACE SPEED BETWEEN THE GRINDING WHEEL AND THE CAM LOBE. IN THE THIRD, THE DYNAMIC CONSTRAINTS INCLUDED CONSTANT STOCK REMOVAL RATE. THE GOAL WAS TO DEVELOP A CORRELATION BETWEEN THESE THREE APPROACHES AND THE NORMAL STRESS SEEN BY THE GRINDING WHEEL. THE DESIRED RESULT BEING THE MINIMIZING OF WHEEL WEAR WHILE MAINTAINING QUALITY PARTS AT REASONABLE PRODUCTION RATES. FROM A COST PERSPECTIVE, THIS IS MOST USEFUL IN REGARDS TO CBN GRINDING. CONSEQUENTLY, THE TESTS USED CBN GRINDING WHEELS EXCLUSIVELY.
