A DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEM IS PRESENTED, WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AT THE INSTITUTE FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERING AND MACHINE TOOLS (IFW) FOR FORCE ADAPTIVE INTERNAL GRINDING. ITS APPLICATION OFFERS MANY ADVANTAGES, I.E. REDUCED CYCLE TIME, INCREASED WORKPIECE QUALITY AND IMPROVED PROCESS SECURITY. AN INTEGRATED SUBSYSTEM, WHICH DETECTS CONTACT BETWEEN TOOL AND WORKPIECE, REDUCES IDLE TIMES CAUSED BY AIR GRINDING TO A NEGLIGIBLE VALUE. A NEW STRATEGY ALLOWS THE QUICK REDUCTION OF ANY KIND OF DEVIATIONS OF WORKPIECE CIRCULARITY. THE ESSENTIAL PART OF THE CONTROL SYSTEM IS A SELFTUNING, DIGITAL, CLOSED-LOOP CONTROLLER, WHICH IS CONTINUOUSLY OPTIMIZED WITH RESPECT TO TIME-VARIANT INFLUENCES OF THE CONTROLLED GRINDING PROCESS (E.G. TOOL WEAR).
