EFFECTS OF THE THERMAL DEFORMATION OF BOTH WHEEL AND WORKPIECE UPON THE SIZE GENERATION PROCESS ARE ANALYZED IN CYLINDRICAL PLUNGE GRINDING. IT IS MADE CLEAR THAT THE OVERSHOOTING PHENOMENA IN SIZE GENERATION RATE, IN GRINDING FORCES AND IN RESIDUAL STOCK ARE CAUSED BY THE RAPID INCREASE OF THE THERMAL DEFORMATION RATES OF WHEEL AND WORKPIECE. THEN A NEW PLUNGE GRINDING TECHNIQUE, IN WHICH BOTH SPEED RATIO AND PLUNGE SPEED ARE CONTINUOUSLY CONTROLLED, IS PROPOSED FOR HIGH EFFICIENCY AND HIGH ACCURACY WITH TAKING EFFECTS OF THE THERMAL DEFORMATION RATE INTO CONSIDERATION.
