IN ID-GRINDING WITH SMALL CBN-WHEELS HIGH SPINDLE SPEEDS ARE NECESSARY TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE CBN TECHNOLOGY. TODAY HIGH-FREQUENCY SPINDLES EQUIPPED WITH ACTIVE MAGNETIC BEARINGS ARE AVAILABLE. SENSORS INSIDE THE SPINDLE CONTINUOUSLY DETECT AND CONTROL THE ROTOR POSITION IN RADIAL AND AXIAL DIRECTION BY MAGNETIC FORCES. THE PAPER PRESENTS FIRST RESULTS WITH THIS NEW SPINDLE TECHNOLOGY CONCERNING THE STATIC AND DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR AND THE MECHANICAL RUN-OUT. FURTHER, A STRATEGY WILL BE POINTED OUT TO CONTROL THE ID-GRINDING PROCESS USING THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE ROTOR BY MAGNETIC FORCES. DEPENDING ON THE METHOD OF ROTOR DISPLACEMENT, A DEFINED INFEED MOTION OF THE GRINDING WHEEL CAN BE PERFORMED. DEFLECTION OF THE QUILL CAN BE COMPENSATED ON-LINE BY INCLINING THE ROTOR IN THE CONTRARY SENSE. IN ADDITION, A SHORT-STROKE OSCILLATION IN AXIAL DIRECTION IS POSSIBLE.
