THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE PROCESS OF FINE SURFACE GRINDING BOTH SIDES OF WORKPIECES SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE PROCESS ACHIEVES REMARKABLE ACCURACIES FOR FLATNESS, PARALLELISM, SURFACE FINISH AND SIZE. THE TERM FINE RELATES TO THE GRIT SIZE OF THE WHEELS (FROM 150 TO 400 GRIT) AND TYPE OF OPERATION, THAT IS, IT IS INTENDED FOR FINE WORK WHICH NEEDS CLOSE TOLERANCES AND CAREFUL HANDLING, RATHER THAN A HOGGING OPERATION INTENDED TO HOG OFF LARGE AMOUNTS OF STOCK. UNLIKE CONVENTIONAL SURFACE GRINDERS AND DISC GRINDERS, THE FINE GRINDING PROCESS UTILIZES THE FLAT SIDES OF FINE GRIT GRINDING WHEELS RUN AT SLOW SPEEDS. ACCURACY IS ACHIEVED DUE TO THE FLAT ABRASIVE SURFACES COMBINED WITH FREE-FLOATING OF THE WORKPIECES AND SELF- ALIGNMENT OF THE TWO FLAT ABRASIVE GRINDING WHEELS.
