THIS PAPER INTRODUCES THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MATERIAL REMOVAL MECHANISMS IN THE ELECTROCHEMICAL GRINDING (ECG) PROCESS TO CONTROL OVERCUT. THE BEHAVIOR OF THE PROCESS IS EXPLAINED WITH RESPECT TO MECHANICAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL ACTIONS. BASIC ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTIONS AND THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH ELECTROCHEMICAL ACTION ARE COMPREHENSIVELY INVESTIGATED. THE EFFECT OF ECG PROCESS VARIABLES ON BOTTOM AND SIDE OVERCUTS ALSO IS PROVIDED. IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT ANODIC PASSIVITY SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTIONS, OXIDE FILM, OVERCUT, AND SURFACE FINISH. AN OFF-LINE MULTIRESPONSE OPTIMIZATION STUDY THAT PROVIDES THE BALANCE BETWEEN MECHANICAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL ACTIONS IS INTRODUCED TO ACHIEVE MINIMUM OVERCUT.
