A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF ROUGH AND FINISH GRINDING ON THE SURFACE DAMAGE, SURFACE FINISH AND STRENGTH OF AN ALUMINA AND A GLASS CERAMIC IS PRESENTED. THE RESULTS WERE OBTAINED BY SCANNING ELECTRON AND TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, SURFACE ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENTS AND TRANSVERSE RUPTURE STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS. THE SURFACE QUALITY ATTAINABLE DEPENDED ON THE CERAMIC MATERIAL AND ITS STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES. AN EFFECT ON THE COMPONENT STRENGTH AS A RESULT OF THE GRINDING CONDITIONS APPLIED WAS NOT ASCERTAINED. THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIALS INVESTIGATED DEPENDED ONLY ON THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND MICROSTRUCTURAL PARAMETERS OF THE BULK MATERIAL.
