SINTERED AND CAST BASALT IS A NEW MATERIAL UTILIZED IN THE BUILDING OF MANY MACHINE TOOL PARTS. THE PAPER IS DEVOTED TO THE STUDY OF THE BASALT GRINDING PROCESS USING DIAMOND WHEELS. EXPERIMENTS ARE PRESENTED REGARDING THE UTILIZATION OF THIS MATERIAL IN SURFACE GRINDING AND THE MAIN PARAMETERS OF THE CUTTING REGIME ARE STUDIED. THE RELATIONSHIP REGARDING THE ROUGHNESS FUNCTION OF EQUIVALENT GRINDING THICKNESS UTILIZED AS AN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE IS ESTABLISHED. WITH THE PURPOSE OF CLARIFYING SOME ASPECTS OF BASALT GRINDING WITH DIAMOND WHEELS, THIS PAPER INVESTIGATES THIS ASPECT BY APPLYING CERTAIN PHYSICAL METHODS, E.G. SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. CERTAIN MACHINE ELEMENTS IN WHICH METAL WAS SUBSTITUTED FOR BASALT ARE PRESENTED AS A RESULT OF OUR INVESTIGATIONS, WHICH REPRESENTS A FIRST STEP IN ESTABLISHING NEW PERSPECTIVES IN THE INDUSTRY.
