THE SPECIFICS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INDUSTRIAL PROGRAM TO REDUCE ORGANICS IN AQUEOUS WASTE STREAMS AND RECOVER AND RECYCLE PRODUCTION SOLVENTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE INDIVIDUAL WASTE STREAMS WERE TRACED TO THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS GENERATING THE WASTE STREAM. THE POTENTIAL OF MODIFYING THE PROCESS TO GENERATE LESS WASTE WAS EVALUATED. THE MOST ATTRACTIVE PROCESS MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED. THE MODIFICATIONS INCLUDE REPLACING CONTACT CONDENSORS WITH NONCONTACT HEAT EXCHANGERS, IMPROVING PHASE SEPARATOR PERFORMANCE AND RECOVERING SOLVENTS WITH AQUEOUS AZEOTROPES BY BATCH DISTILLATION. THE STRAIGHTFORWARD REVISION OF THE MANUFACTURING METHODS HAS RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION OF WASTE PRODUCTION AND COST-EFFECTIVE RECOVERY OF PRODUCTION SOLVENTS.
