SUPERABRASIVE GRINDING WHEELS REQUIRE DIFFERENT DRESSING STRATEGIES COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL WHEELS. A METHOD FOR THE DETECTION OF THE CONTACT BETWEEN DRESSER AND GRINDING WHEEL IS NECESSARY. THREE SENSORS FOR CONTACT DETECTION AT DRESSING ARE DESCRIBED. THE FIRST SENSOR MEASURES THE POWER WHICH IS CONSUMED BY THE AC-MOTOR OF THE DRESSING SPINDLE. THE SECOND SENSOR IS A PIEZOELECTRIC STACK. THE VOLTAGE OF THE PIEZO ELEMENT CHANGES UNDER EXTERNAL DRESSING FORCES. THE THIRD IS AN ACOUSTIC EMISSION SENSOR. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES PRINCIPLE AND DESIGN OF THE SENSORS, COMPARES THE SENSOR SIGNALS, AND EVALUATES THE APPLICABILITY OF THE THREE METHODS FOR INDUSTRIAL USE IN SUPERABRASIVE GRINDING.
