CERMETS ARE INCREASINGLY BECOMING MORE IMPORTANT AS AN ENGINEERING MATERIAL. COMPARED TO CEMENTED TUNGSTEN CARBIDES, THEY ARE RECOGNIZED AS BEING DIFFICULT TO GRIND, RESULTING IN LOW MATERIAL REMOVAL RATES, AND IN SOME CASES THE NEED FOR FREQUENT DRESSING OF THE GRINDING WHEEL SURFACE TO MAINTAIN A SUITABLY OPEN TEXTURE. THE INFLUENCE OF MACHINE PARAMETERS, FOR EXAMPLE WHEEL SPEED, INFEED, AND WHEEL/WORKPIECE PRESENTATION, ARE DEMONSTRATED. HOWEVER, PARTICULAR EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED UPON THE GRINDING WHEEL, AND ESPECIALLY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIAMOND PARTICLE. A VARIETY OF TYPES OF NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC DIAMOND GRIT ARE USED.
