WHILE THE USE OF SUPERABRASIVES IS INCREASING, ONE MAJOR AREA OF DIFFICULTY IS TO CONVINCE SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZE INDUSTRIES ABOUT THE JUSTIFICATION OF INVESTING IN MORE EXPENSIVE GRINDING WHEELS. THIS PAPER DEALS WITH A REALISTIC MODELING OF DIMENSIONAL VARIATION AND COST PER PIECE CONSIDERATIONS. IN GRINDING, THE RATE OF WHEEL WEAR AND MATERIAL REMOVAL RATE ARE RELATED BY THE GRINDING RATIO. SURFACE GRINDING OF A RECTANGULAR WORKPIECE IS MODELED. WORKPIECE DIMENSIONAL VARIATION IN THE ABSENCE OF WEAR COMPENSATION DEVICES IS DISCUSSED. THE RELATIONSHIP OF COST PER PIECE TO VARIOUS GRINDING VARIABLES OF WHEEL COST, LABOR RATE, GRINDING RATIO, AND WHEEL SURFACE SPEED IS DERIVED. THE DEVELOPED MODEL IS THEN USED FOR COMPARING THE DIMENSIONAL VARIATION OF A WORKPIECE, AND THE COST PER PIECE FOR CONVENTIONAL AND SUPERABRASIVE GRINDING.
