AS ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE STRINGENT, INDUSTRY IS FACED WITH IMPLEMENTING NEW TECHNIQUES TO TREAT WASTE WATER THAT IS DISCHARGED TO THE SEWER. INDUSTRIES USING METALWORKING FLUIDS MAY FIND IT DIFFICULT TO MEET THE CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND (COD) LEVEL MANDATED BY THEIR PUBLICLY OWNED TREATMENT WORKS (POTW). METALWORKING FLUIDS HAVE AN INHERENTLY HIGH COD. THIS RESULTS FROM THE FLUIDS BEING COMPRISED OF COMPLEX ORGANIC COMPOUNDS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO DESTRUCT. METHODS OF REDUCING THE COD OF METALWORKING FLUIDS ARE DISCUSSED. THE PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS OF VARIOUS METHODS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. ALL METHODS INVESTIGATED ARE FOLLOWING PRIMARY TREATMENT BY ULTRAFILTRATION. TECHNIQUES THOROUGHLY EXAMINED WERE CHEMICAL OXIDATION, ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT WITH CATALYSTS, MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGIES, AND BIODEGRADATION. THIS PAPER PROVIDES A SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY, PERFORMANCE, AN
