EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL RESULTS ARE PRESENTED TO SHOW THAT SHEAR ANGLES AT EXIT CHANGE DURING INTERMITTENT CUTTING AND ARE SMALLER THAN THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CUT. THIS ROTATION CAUSES NEGATIVE SHEAR UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, AND RESULTS IN HIGHER TENSILE STRESS ON THE CUTTER LEADING TO TOOL BREAKAGE.
