AN OPTIMIZATION MODEL FOR A TURNING PROCESS IS PRESENTED. A COMPUTER SIMULATION IS USED TO MODEL THE SURFACE PROFILE GENERATION IN TURNING. THE MODEL ACCOUNTS FOR THE STOCHASTIC NATURE AND THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF THE CUTTING PROCESS. THE SIMULATION MODEL IS THEN INTEGRATED INTO A STOCHASTIC OPTIMIZATION MODEL WHICH IS UTILIZED TO OBTAIN THE OPTIMUM CUTTING CONDITIONS FOR A ROUGH CUTTING OPERATION. THE ALGORITHM FOR OBTAINING THE OPTIMAL SOLUTION FROM THE MODEL IS ALSO DESCRIBED.
