THE USE OF LIQUID NITROGEN (LN2) AS A REPLACEMENT FOR CONVENTIONAL CUTTING FLUIDS HAS BEEN EXPLORED TO IMPROVE THE MACHINABILITY FOR SOME DIFFICULT-TO-MACHINE MATERIALS. A GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CUTTING TEMPERATURES IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE THE COST-EFFECTIVE LN2 SUPPLY FOR THIS COOLING TECHNOLOGY. THIS PAPER PRESENTS A FINITE ELEMENT SIMULATION OF THE CUTTING TEMPERATURES FOR THE LN2 COOLED MACHINING PROCESSES. THE EFFECT OF THE LN2 COOLANT JETS ON THE CUTTING PROCESSES IS EVALUATED BY USING A CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT, ESTIMATED EXPERIMENTALLY.
