IN THIS PAPER, THE CAUSE OF EXCESSIVE CHIPPING ON THE SHARPENED EDGES OF SURFACE-NITRIDED, FLUID CONTROL VALVES USED IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY WAS IDENTIFIED AND TWO ECONOMICALLY VIABLE SOLUTIONS WERE FOUND. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE EMBRITTLEMENT THAT LED TO THE CHIPPING ORIGINATED DURING A TWO-STEP NITRIDING PROCESS IN WHICH MORE NITROGEN DIFFUSED INTO THE PART THAT WAS OPTIMUM FOR ITS INTENDED USE. IT IS DEMONSTRATED THAT THE USE OF A LESS AGGRESSIVE NITRIDING PROCESS OR A POST-NITRIDE ANNEALING CAN ELIMINATE THE CHIPPING.
