FOR UNDERSTANDING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION (AE) SIGNALS AT DIFFERENT MODES OF THE GRINDING PROCESS OF FINE CERAMICS, A PIECE OF ALUMINA WAS SCRATCHED USING A DIAMOND SCRIBE IN A PENDULAR SCRATCHING TEST. REGARDING THE LOW LEVEL OF NOISE IN THESE EXPERIMENTS, AE SIGNAL ANALYSIS INDICATES DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS AT DIFFERENT MODES OF DEFORMATION. FURTHERMORE, EMISSION OF AE SIGNALS AFTER DISENGAGEMENT OF THE DIAMOND SCRIBE FROM THE WORKPIECE WAS RELATED TO THE RESIDUAL STRESS DUE TO SCRATCHING.
