CEMENTED CARBIDES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT MATERIALS FOR CUTTING TOOLS. THE MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES CAN BE INFLUENCED BY A WIDE RANGE OF ALLOYING CONTENTS OF CARBIDES AND BONDING MATERIALS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF FINE GRAIN CARBIDES FOR CUTTING TOOLS HAS LED TO AN INCREASE OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES LIKE TOUGHNESS AND HARDNESS, RESULTING IN A BETTER TOOL LIFE COMPARED TO COARSER GRAIN CARBIDE TOOLS. THIS REPORT SHOWS THE ADVANTAGES AND FIELD OF APPLICATION OF FINE GRAIN CARBIDES IN COMPARISON TO CONVENTIONAL CARBIDES. THE TOOL WEAR CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE DESCRIBED AND THE RELATION BETWEEN GRAIN SIZE AND TOOL LIFE IS STATED.
