CUTTING FLUID IS ONE OF THE MAJOR WASTE STREAMS PRODUCED IN MACHINING. TO REVEAL THE ROLE OF CUTTING FLUIDS, THE INFLUENCE OF CUTTING FLUID ON WORKPIECE TEMPERATURE HISTORY WAS STUDIED EXPERIMENTALLY AND ANALYTICALLY. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS, RELATIVE TO THE TOOL, WERE TAKEN CONTINUOUSLY THROUGHOUT A BORING OPERATION ON ALUMINUM ALLOYS. A MODEL OF THE TRANSIENT TEMPERATURE FIELD WAS DEVELOPED ASSUMING A RING HEAT SOURCE, WHICH WAS VERIFIED EXPERIMENTALLY. SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS OF CUTTING FLUID ON TEMPERATURE RESPONSE IN THE WORKPIECE WERE OBSERVED.
