THIS INVESTIGATION WAS UNDERTAKEN TO MEASURE THE AMOUNT OF APPLIED FLUID THAT PASSES THROUGH THE GRINDING ZONE FOR CREEP-FEED GRINDING. A TEST RIG WAS DEVELOPED TO SEPARATE THE USEFUL FLOW THROUGH THE GRINDING ZONE FROM THAT PORTION OF THE APPLIED FLUID THAT SPLASHES AWAY. WHEEL POROSITY, GRIT SIZE, AND NOZZLE POSITION WERE FOUND TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON THE PERCENTAGE OF THE APPLIED FLUID PASSING THROUGH THE GRINDING ZONE. THE RESULTS OF THIS INVESTIGATION ARE BEING APPLIED TO PREDICTING AND CONTROLLING THE ONSET OF BURN-OUT AND THERMAL DAMAGE IN CREEP-FEED GRINDING.
