THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE ADVANCES IN AUTOMATED SURFACE FINISHING. BECAUSE SURFACE FINISHING IS OFTEN EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING, IT IS DESIRABLE TO AUTOMATE THE PROCESS. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO MAIN AREAS OF RESEARCH FOR AUTOMATED SURFACE FINISHING: FORCE CONTROL AND PLANNING. THIS PAPER REVIEWS DEVELOPMENTS IN FORCE CONTROL AND THEN DISCUSSES DEVELOPMENTS OF PATH PLANNING, INCLUDING REVERSE ENGINEERING OF THE SURFACE, AND ROBOT PATH CODE GENERATION. THIS PAPER ALSO DISCUSSES TESTS OF THE PATH PLANNING CODE AT A MAJOR AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURING FACILITY, AND IMPLEMENTATION USING CONVENTIONAL ROBOTS AS WELL AS A STEWART PLATFORM MACHINE.
