When manufacturing in general moved from manual machines to NC machines, in the seventies and eighties, justification was primarily based upon time-study of the part of the NC machine in question, together with the features of the NC control. Now that manufacturing is moving from the stand-alone CNC machines to Cells/Systems, many other factors have to be considered in justifying the system. This paper will try to analyze the sequence of steps and the thought process involved in creating and justifying a machining center cell/system.
