Physical vapor deposition (PVD) describes a family of coating processes that produce surface layers that are the result of the deposition of individual atoms or molecules of a source material mixed with a gas and directed towards metalworking tools. All PVD processes are carried out under a hard vacuum. There are three methods to apply PVD coatings: cathodic arc evaporation, reactive sputtering, and ion plating.
