During cutting basic mechanisms of chip formation and conditions of contact and interactions between tool, workpiece and chip incite vibrations of the machining system. Vibration signals represent the interactions of process and system behavior basically influenced by rigidity and damping. Signal processing and determination of characteristic quantities in correlation with process phenomena and effects are qualified for identification, monitoring and diagnosis of cutting operations. Based on several methods for signal analysis specific characteristic quantities are determined and applied for multi-functional evaluation of tool wear, chip formation, surface roughness and machinability during turning.
