Experimental grinding research has lead to methodology to achieve optimum grinding conditions for structural ceramics. Optimum here refers to maximum ground strength and minimum grinding time. Wheel grit size and machine parameters of wheel depth of cut, workspeed, and wheelspeed in surface grinding were investigated. Ceramic materials which were investigated are hot pressed silicon nitride, reaction bonded silicon nitride, aluminum oxide, and silicon carbide. Results indicate that the primary factors which control the strength of ground ceramics are grind direction and the grit depth of cut.
