A preliminary investigation was undertaken to study the mechanics of the turning process for hardened steels and the mechanism of white-layer formation. Cylindrical turning and facing experiments were conducted to investigate various aspects of the cutting process including the chips generated, the tool inserts and their wear condition, the surfaces produced, and variations in the cutting forces and specific cutting energy. Chip cross sectional areas, obtained by weighing chips and measuring their lengths, were found to be smaller than the cutting cross-sectional areas in most cases.
