Through-feed centerless grinding is a precision finishing process used in the manufacture of circular components. A limiting parameter in this process is often workpiece roundness errors caused by lobing. This paper introduces the idea of approximating the through-feed process as a series of plunge grinding cycles each with a varying setup geometry. In this manner, the analysis from plunge centerless grinding studies can be transferred to the through-feed case. In particular, the concept of an average growth rate is introduced. Experimental tests on short and long workpieces demonstrate the effectiveness and limitations of the average growth rate chart.
