The Ford Research Laboratory and Visteon have developed a method for identifying and reducing the geometric variability of injection molding die sets. This method has been successfully applied to diagnose the root cause for the geometric variability of truck park/turn reflector parts. It allows comprehensive analysis of the discrepancies between the geometries of different core/cavity die sets. The tool inspection results are presented in a color coded error-map which greatly facilitates the identification of problem areas and gives information which can be used to reduce part to part variability that is caused by die to die variability.
