Ultrasonic vibration turning tests were conducted on beta titanium alloys (Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al and Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloys) with iron-cutting-grade carbide tools. Effects on machinability aspects, including surface integrity and tool life, were studied respectively for the cases of two-dimensional, continuous and intermittent turning operations. Tool life of a carbide tool subjected to turning operations of these alloys was substantially improved, because the ultrasonic vibration cutting technique was very effective in preventing heavy adhesion of the workpiece materials in question onto the tool cutting edge.
