A three-dimensional finite element model is developed to analyze the drill torsional strength, and to optimize the drill cross-sectional geometry. The flute area is used to represent chip evacuation capacity, and is included as a constraint in the analysis of drill torsional strength. Several drill geometrical features, including the flute heel shape and web thickness, are studied for their impacts on drill torsional strength when the flute area remains the same. An optimization scheme is presented for flute heel shape design to achieve higher drill torsional strength and greater chip evacuation capacity. An example is illustrated in obtaining an optimal drill cross-sectional profile in terms of the torsional strength with a given flute area or chip evacuation capacity by using the simulated annealing algorithm.
