In grinding of ceramic engine valves made of sintered silicium nitride (SSN), the brittle fracture behavior and high failure sensitivity of ceramic materials leads to insufficient reproducibility and the fulfillment of the demands on the workpiece due to surface and subsurface crack initiation. Investigations of several authors using single scratch tests on different ceramic materials show when a limiting undeformed chip thickness is exceeded, cracks and materials breakouts in the surface are caused.
