This paper presents the development of a two-dimensional model to describe the material removal process during the machining of glass ceramics. The model is implemented through the use of finite element methods, and is capable of presenting crack initiation, crack propagation and material separation in the chip formation process. The model predicts the cutting force through a numerical integration algorithm. Simulation results reveal the non-linear, irreversible stress-strain behavior of the crack resistance of glass ceramics during machining, and the dynamics of two interchangeable modes of tensile-induced cracking and shear-induced yielding in the chip formation process.
