Experimental grinding research has led to information regarding ground strength of the ceramic and the depth of damage in the ceramic caused by grinding. Diamond wheel grit size and machine parameters of wheel depth of cut, workspeed, and wheelspeed in surface grinding were investigated. Ceramic materials which were investigated are hot pressed silicon nitride, reaction bonded silicon nitride, aluminum oxide, and silicon carbide. Results provide methodology to achieve maximum ground strength and to utilize damage depth information to minimize grinding time.
