High frequency honing is a combination of single pass honing and a superimposed ultrasonic oscillation of the tool in longitudinal direction. This combination leads to a largely changed process behavior. To achieve a steady oscillation there are certain requirements on the shape of the ultrasonic transducer and the tool. A device for the geometric design of honing tools has been developed and the tool holding fixture has been improved. The features of performance of single pass honing and high frequency honing have been compared. Examinations have been made of the tool life of high frequency honing tools.
