An experimental method is proposed to quantify the depth of deformed layer in a hard-turned surface using elemental analysis. A manual lathe was used to cut a tool steel using PCBN and ceramic tools at different cutting conditions. After machining, specimens of as-received and as-machined workpieces were prepared for metallurgical examination. To determine element distribution of machined surface, EDS mounted on SEM is used. The distribution of three elements (C, Cr, and Fe) was plotted against the distance beneath the machine surface. Finally, the estimated depths of deformed layer by elemental analysis were compared with those by scanning electron micrographs.
