This paper presents practical methods for calculating cutting forces and power consumption in milling and turning based on machining conditions and mechanical properties of workpiece materials. Tangential cutting force, torque, and power calculations in milling are based on the ultimate strength of work materials, cross-sectional area of uncut chip, number of inserts in cut, and the cutting conditions. Milling tests were carried out using a rotating dynamometer. Cutting force and power calculations in turning are based on depth of cut, feed rate, and reassessed power constants for a variety of work materials tested at various machining conditions. Cutting tests were performed using a turning three-component cutting force dynamometer.
