This paper presents the construction of an ultraprecision machine tool, and an experimental machining using the developed system. The system is composed of air bearing system, granite bed, air pad, and linear feeding mechanism. First, the system was subjected to stability tests at high speeds. For this purpose, workpieces made of an aluminum alloy were machined at different rotational speeds of spindle. The limit speed for ultraprecision machining was determined by examining surface roughness. Then, the effect of cutting conditions on surface roughness was investigated within the limit speed. Finally, the practical information for the ultraprecision machine was suggested.
