Tolerance analysis is critical in manufacturing process planning to ensure the quality of products. The tolerance charting technique is a popular approach for tolerance analysis. Its purpose is to analyze the problem of tolerance stackup in manufacturing. Although tolerance chart analysis is successful in handling dimensional tolerances, it is not sufficient in dealing with geometric tolerances. It is also a reactive approach that analyzes a set of predetermined process sequences rather than providing proactive guidance to setup and fixture planning. In order to achieve total tolerance control, a tolerance normalization approach is proposed in this paper. A normalized tolerance is defined as the maximum permissible rotational deviation of the datum from its ideal position in component locating.
