THE SRI CONNECTIVITY ALGORITHM IS AN IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE WHICH IDENTIFIES CONNECTED REGIONS OF LIGHT OR DARK PIXELS WITHIN A BINARY IMAGE AND COMPUTES CERTAIN GEOMETRIC FEATURES FOR THOSE REGIONS. THE ALGORITHM WAS DEVELOPED IN 1973 BY RICHARD O. DUDA, HELEN C. WOLF, AND GERALD AGIN AT THE STANFORD RESEARCH INSTITUTE UNDER A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION. WHILE THIS ALGORITHM HAS BEEN INCORPORATED IN SEVERAL COMMERCIAL VISION SYSTEMS, THE ACTUAL TECHNICAL DETAILS OF THE ALGORITHM HAVE NOT BEEN WIDELY DISSEMINATED. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THOSE DETAILS IN THE CONTEXT OF A MACHINE INDEPENDENT, C LANGUAGE IMPLEMENTATION.
