FRINGE PROJECTION TECHNIQUE IS USED IN WHICH A LASER BEAM PASSES THROUGH A GRATING (RONCHI RULING) AND GENERATES OPTICAL FRINGES (STRIPES) ONTO THE OBJECT UNDER MEASUREMENT. TO LOCATE THE FRINGE EDGES MORE ACCURATELY, SUBPIXEL RESOLUTION IS DEVELOPED. THROUGH AN OPTIMUM RECONSTRUCTION FILTER, THE SUBPIXELATION TECHNIQUE EXHIBITS LOW SENSITIVITY TO NOISE. THE FRINGE PROJECTION TECHNIQUE CAN BE APPLIED TO GEOMETRY CHARACTERIZATION SUCH AS RADIUS MEASUREMENT. THE MAJOR ADVANTAGE IS THAT MORE IMAGE POINTS ALONG THE DETECTED EDGE CAN BE UTILIZED TO REDUCE MEASUREMENT ERRORS SO THAT THE MEASUREMENT CAN BE MORE ACCURATE AND PRECISE. THE MEASUREMENT ACCURACY BETWEEN USING ONE PIXEL AND THE DEVELOPED SUBPIXEL RESOLUTIONS IS COMPARED.
