WHILE MUCH EFFORT HAS BEEN EXPENDED IN THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF IMAGE PROCESSING HARDWARE BASED ON THE RS-170 TELEVISION CAMERA STANDARD, RELATIVELY LITTLE HARDWARE EXISTS FOR LINEAR CAMERAS. LINEAR CAMERA-BASED VISION SYSTEMS OFFER SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES IN MANY APPLICATIONS BUT HAVE DIFFERENT INTERFACING AND PROCESSING REQUIREMENTS. TYPICAL RS-170 IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEMS UTILIZE FRAME-BUFFER ARCHITECTURES IN WHICH IMAGES CAN BE RECIRCULATED THROUGH FRAME BUFFERS AND PROCESSING HARDWARE REPEATEDLY. LINEAR CAMERA APPLICATIONS, HOWEVER, TYPICALLY GENERATE VERY LARGE IMAGES THAT HAVE EXCESSIVE STORAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR COST-EFFECTIVE SYSTEMS. TECHNIQUES AND THEIR HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATION ARE EXAMINED THAT DO NOT REQUIRE RECIRCULATING IMAGES WHILE PROVIDING AT LEAST SOME LOW-LEVEL PROCESSING CAPABILITIES. THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE APPROACHES IS EVALUATED FOR BOTH HARDWARE AND
