IN RECENT TIMES, EXPERTS HAVE REALIZED THAT UNLESS ALL ASPECTS OF MANUFACTURING ARE INTEGRATED, TOTAL AUTOMATION OF THE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE. IN THE PRESENT WORK, A MACHINE VISION SYSTEM HAS GUIDED A GENERAL 6R ROBOT ALONG A PLANAR PATH FOR SPRAY PAINTING OF FLAT POLYGONAL OBJECTS. THE VISION SYSTEM PROFIDES AN INTELLIGENT INTERFACE TO CALCULATE THE SPRAY PAINTING PATH FOR NEW AND UNKNOWN PARTS. ONCE THE END EFFECTOR PATH IS CALCULATED, AN ITERATIVE APPROACH SOLVES THE INVERSE KINEMATICS OF A GENERAL 6R MANIPULATOR. THE PATH GENERATION SOFTWARE INTERFACES TO THE ROBOT CONTROLLER TO DIRECT THE ROBOT END EFFECTOR ALONG THE PRESCRIBED PATH. THE DEVELOPED INTELLIGENT SYSTEM CAN EASILY BE ADAPTED TO ASSEMBLY, WELDING, AND OTHER OPERATIONS THAT REQUIRE ROBOT MANEUVER.
