PLANT PROPAGATION BY SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS HAS GREAT POTENTIAL TO BECOME AN IMPORTANT TECHNIQUE IN THE PRODUCTION OF PLANTLETS AND ARTIFICIAL SEEDS OF SEVERAL PLANT SPECIES. AUTOMATED PROCESSES ARE NEEDED FOR A LARGE- SCALE PRODUCTION TO BE POSSIBLE. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN ALGORITHM FOR THE RECOGNITION OF SOMATIC EMBRYOS OF BIRCH THAT IS AN IMPORTANT TREE SPECIES FOR FORESTRY IN FINLAND. EMBRYOS THAT PROBABLY WILL GERMINATE CAN BE SELECTED FROM CELL SUSPENSION CULTURES. THE ALGORITHM IS BASED ON DISCARDING OBJECTS THAT ARE NOT EMBRYOS BY EXTRACTING CERTAIN QUALITATIVE FEATURES AND THEN SELECTING GOOD EMBRYOS FROM THE REMAINING OBJECTS.
